V rating: VV ‘Bare Pear’ opened three months ago near the corner of Queen and Bourke Streets. It has a short but carefully designed menu of sandwiches using organic meat and vegetables and cheeses, breakfast muesli and toasts and a lunch special of soup (generally something vegetarian - today’s were tomato and bean or pumpkin, broccoli, lentil and spice) and a slice of sourdough bread for $4.90. Sandwiches are in the range of $6-8, which is pretty standard in the CBD. They use Bonsoy, which is the best tasting soy milk around as well as being, you guessed it, organic. They also offer muffins and organic coffee which people actually seem to drink and like (I am no coffee aficionado but am a reasonably well, if self-taught, people watcher). One of the muffins they offer has no gluten or added sugar. It is apple and cinnamon. I tried it and it was somewhat mushy - I was not keen on the texture, but the concept is good! So if you are looking for a healthy alternative at a reasonable price in the city, try it out. I am giving it a VV rating.

This sounds amazing. How convenient that they’ve opened up right around the corner from work. I’m still trying to find my great local cafe near work.

There are actually a few organic cafes around Melbourne, including in the CBD, if you have a closer look. There is a good one on Degraves St (one of the classic cafe alleyways in Melbourne, near Flinders St station and coming off Flinders Lane). But I am yet to try their LSDs and will doubtless let you know when I do!

What is a Latte Soy Dandelion? Is that Dandeloin coffee/tea?

Ohmigod you haven’t had an LSD before??? It is made from dandelion tea, which is made from the roots of dandelion flowers. It is used as a caffeine substitute. Tastes best in latte form, and especially if made with Bonsoy. Trust me. I know my soy milk

Now I’m kind of embarrassed to admit that I haven’t tried an LSD… I think maybe Gertrude and Alice do them in Sydney, but otherwise this might be yet another reason to come visit you in Melbourne.

Yeah! Visit Melbourne! Woohoo! (Did I just overuse the exclamation mark?)

[…] 6. They do the all important LSD (latte soy dandelion). Las Chicas in Carlisle St, Balaclava still do the best, followed by Bare Pear (CBD). But TOFWD are now in third place. […]

When I read this review I was so excited to hear that LSD’s are available in Melbourne CBD. I headed up there this lunchtime to find the Bare Pear - only to find that there is no such place cafe currently on or near any of the 4 corners of Queen & Bourke streets.

This sounds dire! Thanks for the update. I will send an email to my Melbourne friends and see if I can find out what’s happened to Bare Pear. My friend who recommended Bare Pear - a big LSD fan - also recommended The Organic Food and Wine Shop in the Melbourne CBD for LSDs… although sadly Bare Pear was better.

Bare Pear on the corner of Bourke and Collins Streets is still operating - I’m off to have a LSD at lunchtime.

I Have really enjoyed some of my past lunchtimes at the Bare Pear, however on Friday I had a stone in my soup. I told the waitress (who also seemed like the owner) about it and she simply said “oh that’s from the pepper”. I didn’t want a refund or another bowl of soup, but a simple apology would have been nice. Unfortunately this has turned me off going back… Post a comment
