Well, you know, woman’s prerogative and all that, I’ve decided to change a couple of ratings based on repeat visits.

First, Purple Lotus is moving into the coveted Super V category. The upgrade comes because we tried their yum cha, which was great, and because of their lovely staff and reliable normal menu. Also, I consistently get good, unprompted feedback from other readers about Purple Lotus.

Second, Bondi Trattoria is moving up a notch to VVV. I reviewed Bondi Tratt when I was first starting out, and gave them a harsh VV because I didn’t want to award VVV lightly. With ten months of veggie reviewing under my belt, I’ve come to appreciate their four veggie main options, fantastic service, and warm, stylish decor. The breakfast menu is also great (I get cravings for the chilli baked beans on baked polenta).

With Purple Lotus, how do they fare on the oyster sauce stakes? I have a vegetarian friend who always has trouble at yum cha because they sometimes sneak it in and he can never be sure.

Purple Lotus is a Buddhist vegetarian restaurant so I’m sure that they would avoid ‘real’ oyster sauce. They seem pretty faithful adherents - i.e. they don’t allow alcohol - so I think your friend could count on the food being truly vegetarian.

good move on the purple lotus upgrade.

last weekend, the only thing that got me out of bed was the promise of yum cha at purple lotus. i stand by my initial review - it’s so good that it’s better than non-veggie yum cha.

I was tempted to give it a Super V right off, but going back for yum cha sealed the deal. The little radish cakes were awesome and I love the fact they have so many steamed dishes, not just fried food.

Actually Andy and I are getting married in February and we wanted to have a vegetarian yum cha brunch the next day. We’ve gone with Bodhis because it’s in the park and can seat a lot of people, but I think Purple Lotus would have been a great choice as well.
