Proving that miracles can happen, the founder of a vegetarian, coop restaurant chain in Melbourne yesterday beat the entire town of Beaconsfield to become Australia’s Local Hero of the Year. Shanaka Fernando, founder of the Lentil as Anything restaurants received the award for his successful, socially inclusive restaurant concept, where there are no prices on the menu and people pay what they can or what they think the meal is worth. He was also recognised for his work with Melbourne’s refugee community, including using his restaurants to provide training and employment opportunities. Congratulations to Shanaka and the Lentil as Anything crew on such a fabulous initiative!

What a wonderful and deserving winner. Wouldn’t it be great if as a result of the award the concept was to expand beyond Melbourne and there were Lentil As Anything restaurants in each state capital in Australia by Australia Day 2008?

Andrew Bolt doesn’t seem to agree with you, Kate: Choosing global warming alarmist Tim Flannery as Australian of the Year was one thing, but the Australia Day Council - chaired by Lisa Curry Kenny- didn’t stop there in its drive to correct your thinking. It also named Shanaka Fernando as Australia’s Local Hero, praising him for establishing “Lentil as Anything”. And “lentil” tells you almost all you need to know. He’s a hate-filled man, our Bolta. And now it seems he hates vegetarians too.

Wow. I am shocked. I mean, it’s so rare for Bolta and I to disagree on these kinds of issues…

I am so pleased. I have been spending a fair bit of my last remaining late summer evening hours in Melbourne on the balcony of the Abbotsford Convent Lentil As Anything, enjoying the serenity of the gardens, the tasty food, bumping into old friends and soaking up the general communal vibe. Hurrah for Shanaka! I’ll miss it when I move to Sydney but I like Andy’s LAS Expansion Plan foe 2008!
