I’m taking a quick break from the honeymoon updates to catch up on some local news. After such a variety of wonderful vegetarian experiences overseas, it was hard to return to Australia and discover that vegetarian yum cha had suffered a body blow with the closure of two great vegetarian restaurants. Vegan Sydney reports that Pitt Street Vegetarian served its last meal at lunch on Tuesday, 27 February and that Purple Lotus closed down less than four weeks later. Both offered cheap, tasty vegan yum cha, and were a good alternative to the more expensive but better known Green Gourmet and Bodhi. If anyone knows the reason for their closure please email me at veggiefriendly[at]gmail.com. I’ve decided to keep the reviews of them on the site in case people are searching for them, but move them to a new section called closed down. The closure of Purple Lotus and Pitt Street Vegetarian follows the demise of Vegal Kitchen and Celestial Palace last year. I hope it doesn’t signify that times are getting tough for vegetarian restaurants. In any event, it’s a reminder of how important it is to support the vegetarian restaurants you love.

I don’t think it’s just vegetarian restaurants that are suffering in Sydney at the moment. Each week the Good Living seems to contain at least one news item about a well known / well reviewed / multi-hatted restaurant that’s gone under. I’ve read reports the drought has increased food costs, while diners in Sydney have become so used to good, cheap food, that restaurants are squeezing their margins and suffering the consequences. On the positive side there seems to be a rise in excellent vegetarian degustations. Along with the Bentley Bar, Anna at Morsels & Musings was telling me that Rockpool do a vegetarian degustation and recently Three Clicks West in Annandale announced they’d be having one every Sunday night. It’s great that as a vegetarian, you can (finally) have these top-notch dining experiences.

Hi Kathryn That’s a really interesting point, and a real shame for the restaurant industry and diners. I’ve often found that restaurants which offer a degustation meal will do a vegetarian version, even when vegetarian food doesn’t really feature on their normal menu. I haven’t tried Rockpool or Three Clicks West, though. We once had a vegetarian degustation at Tetsuya’s (after calling up that afternoon to book the table… I’m not sure how we got that lucky) and it was a fantastic experience. It is great to see the top end restaurants catering for all diets. Post a comment
